On Friday both the Infant and Junior departments went of their summer trip. The Infants visited Manor Farm Wildlife Park in Tenby. Unfortunately for the Infants the weather was not our friend on the day and it rained most of the morning. The children enjoyed a close up encounter with wallabies where they were allowed to feed them and also got very close to the different varieties of lemurs they had in the park. We saw other animals such a bison, flamingos and camels. Thank you to everyone who came on the day and apologies for not being able to sort out the weather for us.

Reptilian visitors

At the moment class 2 are reading the book “Class two went to the zoo”, in which an anaconda follows the children and tries to eat them. To find out more about snakes we asked Mr Rogers (parent at the school) to bring in some of his more unusual pets. He kindly obliged and brought in one of his 13 bearded dragon, Bart and Jake, a corn snake. The children enjoyed seeing these animals up close and most of them touched them to see how they felt. I’m not sure that some of the staff enjoyed their visit quite as much!

On Monday sport’s day was held for both Infant and Junior children. The weather held out meaning the event could be held on the field. The morning saw the Infants competing in sprint, egg and spoon, relay and obstacle races as well as some very competitive mums and dads races. All the children joined in well and received a certificate for their efforts. In the afternoon the Juniors competed in their individual events including relay, javelin throw, shot put, target throwing, speed jumping and long jump. Well done to all the children who competed and thank you to all parents who joined us on the day to support their children.

Mr Creemy comes to visit

July 3, 2010

dscf5637.JPG

This term the class 2 and 6 role play area is set up as a seaside souvenir and ice-cream shop. With this in mind, Mrs Lloyd arranged for the original Mr Creemy to visit to school to talk to the children about making and selling ice-creams. We all found out a lot and the children were able to ask questions that they had thought of prior to the visit. As a special treat Mr Creemy also brought some of the fabulous ice-cream they make, which is now sold under the name of Subzero. The children really enjoyed this visit.

Over the past term all the classes have, once again, been busy planting seeds and looking after their vegetable gardens. The weather has greatly helped the growing process and class 2 and 6 have been able to find ripe strawberries, lots of salad and potatoes in their garden. The children ate some of the salad and potatoes with their school dinners this week.

With our recent P.E. work we have been looking at developing throwing and passing in different ways. Practising these skills will help us with competitive games such as netball, basketball, rugby and football. In this lesson we used a variety of equipment to develop under-arm, chest passes and over-arm throws.

On Thursday, class 2 and 6 went on their visit to Southerndown beach. This trip was postponed from last trip due to poor weather conditions but the weather this time was anything but poor. The children and adults present on the day enjoyed creating artwork in the sand using seaweed and pebbles, followed by rock-pooling in the afternoon. This trip supported both classes current theme as we are reading “Sharing a shell” by Julia Donaldson.

Frogs!

May 8, 2010

 dscf5420.JPG

Our topic over the last two weeks has been the lifecycle of a frog. The children each researched a particular species of frog on the internet ranging from the edible frog to the poison dart frog. On Friday, we made models of the frogs we had researched using paint, colouring pencils and felt tip pens.

On Thursday last week, class 2 went on a trip to the Sony environmental centre in Pencoed. The weather wasn’t exactly at its best but we didn’t let that dampen our spirits. Every group got to dip their nets into the pond and then look at what little creatures came out. The class found everything from tadpoles to newts to water beetles. We learned all about the unique features of the mini-beasts and even found two caddis fly larvae which indicate that the pond had very clean water. When we were out of the pond we went searching in the woodland for other mini-beasts.

Outdoor learning

April 25, 2010

dscf5243.JPG

The whole school has been making the most of the good weather and they have been doing a lot of their lessons outside. Class 2 have been learning about nests and even made their own nest using feathers and sticks. The class found out how challenging this is.

Thursday was world earth day. World earth day was founded by America in 1970 and is celebrated in more than 175 countries every year. It is a day to inspire awareness and appreciation for the natural environment. Class 2 spent the afternoon in the woods making mud monsters. They also looked closely at variation in leaves and seeds and created artwork with natural materials.
