Releasing Lliwgar!
June 28, 2009

This is Lliwgar. He is a painted lady butterfly that class 2, 5 and 6 have cared for in their classes. Lliwgar along with four others arrived as caterpillars but soon grew big enough to spin their cocoons and transform into butterflies. The children enjoyed watching the transformation but knew that the butterflies needed to be released. Lliwgar stayed around a little longer than the others, taking in his new environment before fluttering off to investigate. Lliwgar was decided on as his name as it is Welsh for colourful.

Eating the fruits of our of labour!
June 28, 2009

As you may be aware Class 2 and Class 6 have been working hard on a vegetable garden just outside their classroom. The class have been learning about what plants need to grow healthy and they have watered the garden often to keep all their crops growing. The salad leaf plants and radishes were the first that were ready to be harvested. The children picked the salad leaves themselves, washed them carefully and then tried them in sandwiches. The sandwiches were delicious and all the better because we had made some of the ingredients ourselves. Some of the turnips we have grown were sold at the Summer fayre and the money will be used to buy more seeds for the winter.

24th June 2009. Dear Parent, As you know, the children once again qualified for the finals of the Mid & South Wales Kwik Cricket. The bus will leave Gwaun Ruperra Car Park tomorrow morning at 8.30 am. We need to register the team at the SWALEC Stadium at 9.15am and the competition will start soon afterwards. The pool stages are due to finish at 1.30pm with the final match expected to be completed by 3.30pm. Obviously, we would hope to go all the way this year, as we did last year, but it is impossible to predict at this time exactly when we will return to school. However, I will contact the school at 1.30pm to confirm whether or not we have got through the group stages and make regular ‘phone calls from then on estimating our time back. We are happy to take any child in the junior department who wants to support the cricket team at this exciting event, but we require a permission slip or letter from you in order to do so. If you have not already sent in such a note please fill in the slip below. Obviously, we won’t be able to take anybody who has not brought one in, or with them to the bus tomorrow if they are not accompanied by an adult. Can I ask you to check all items of school uniform that you have at home and insure that you return any that are labelled with somebody else’s name. This is something we need to do fairly regularly as a school because it is easy for children to bring home the wrong item of clothing accidentally. Can I ask all parents that you put suntan cream on your own children each morning, there are creams that will last a whole day. In this way you can ensure your children are covered to a standard that you are happy with. A big thanks to Angela Ryan, Cerys Jeffery and the rest of the team that put together another successful school fair last weekend. £1000 was raised for school funds, and the good nature and friendliness evident on the day can only help to carry these qualities through the rest of the term. Thanks once again, for the positive responses you gave in the quality of teaching survey I sent out recently. Two responses asked about first hand experience and the staff suggested an open evening where they would demonstrate some of the learning activities the children take part in.The next couple of months are going to be very busy as we lead up to our inspection in the Autumn Term so effective use of staff time is important right now. This will be effective use of time if enough parents think it worthwhile. Please return the attached slip to school by a week Friday if you would like this opportunity but I think we would need more than twenty responses for the event to take place. Class 4 have gone on a trip to Kenfig Nature Reserve today and on Monday we welcome three students at various stages of their academic careers to the school on works placement. I am sure they will help the children enjoy further the extensive range of activities they have between now and the end of term. Could I ask you to seek out any Tesco Vouchers you may have and send them into school as soon as possible as the date for submission is the 3rd of July. A big thanks also goes to Mrs. Meriel Rogers for her assistance in organising the donation and delivery of compost for the school gardens. Hopefully, our plants will thrive as a consequence. On Tuesday morning next week at 9.00 am a bus will pick the Year 5 & 6 children up for next years E3+ launch. These after school clubs prove very popular with Year 6 children in many of the cluster schools. The children don’t need to report to school first, but can turn up at 8.55 am at Gwaun Ruperra Car Park. If your child attends breakfast club, Mr. Owen will walk across with them to the car park. On Wednesday morning, the Year 6 children will be at Penygawsi School to take part in a Dragon’s Den Project, which is part of the transition programme prior to their transfer to Y Pant. This looks to be yet another exciting day for the older children.

17th June 2009. Dear Parent, I would like to congratulate the cricket team for qualifying for the county finals for the second year running. Fourteen teams turned up at Miskin last week, with two sides progressing through to the next stage of the tournament, one of whom was us. The county finals take place at Miskin again tomorrow and this promises to be another exciting day. Well done to Hazel Penberthy and Jane Giddy for gaining their First Aid Certificates on Saturday. Both gave up their day for the good of the children at the school. A big thanks from all of us to you both. The school has recently received notification that the dates for the school inspection due to take place this year will be Monday, October 12th through to Wednesday October 14th 2009. Parent opinion will be sought by the inspection team prior to the inspection and any information in relation to this will be passed on to yourselves with plenty of notice given. The Governors’ Annual Report to Parents will take place at 7.00 pm on Wednesday, 8th July. Anyone with any specific questions they would like to put to the governing body about the annual report for this year or other matters at the school, please submit them either to myself or to the Clerk of Governors, Mrs. Janice Stuckey, at Ty Trevithick, Abercynon, in writing. The school summer fair will take place on Saturday, 20th June at 11.00 am. A big thanks to those of you who have contributed items for the White Elephant stall or other attractions at the fair. Thanks also go to those of you who have organised the event and to those of you who are going to help run the different stalls on the day. Preparations will begin at 9.00 am for some of those involved. Can I remind you that we need you to return the “Lucky Envelopes” for the Summer Fair, we also need donations of tins or toiletries for the ‘Match the Ticket’ stall and bottles of wine for the ‘Wine or Water’ stall. Advertisements to be inserted into the programme are charged at £15.00 per full page and £10.00 per half page. If you are interested in placing an advert please contact the school or Mrs. Angela Ryan on 01443 231211, after 6.00 pm. The raffles taking place at the end of the fair will be held at 1.00 pm in order to give you all time to go home and get comfortable to support the British Lions in the first test. The local Police Community Service Officer and the school council will be working together to look at the parking issues surrounding the entrance to the school on Monday. Any cars illegally parked on pavements will be issued with a parking ticket, so please begin parking at Gwaun Ruperra Car Park and walking the children to school from this date. Next Wednesday, 24th June, Class 4 will be visiting the Kenfig Nature Reserve. This is an all day trip and a packed lunch will be required. Could you all please submit your most recent mobile phone number on a slip attached to this letter and return it to school so that we can have up to date contact details for all children. Even if you think the details that we have are up to date, we would still appreciate the slip being completed and returned to school. There has been a very good take up of places for the junior school trip for this year, however there are still spare places for any interested children or parents who would like to go. Yours sincerely, Mike EmanuelHead Teacher.

10th June 2009. Dear Parent, There are still places left on the junior trip to Cardiff Bay and if any of you would like to accompany the children, please let me know. The cost will be the same for adults as for the children, £15 per head. The infant trip on the 9th of July is now fully booked and the total cost including entrance to Folly Farm will be £11.00 per head (adults and children alike). There is no charge for entrance into the farm for children under the age of three. Please could you send the remainder of the trip money into school as soon as possible and at the latest by Friday, 26th June. If you have paid £5.00 deposit per person, then the remainder to pay will be £6.00 per head. Can you please check your children’s hair as there have been reports of head lice in Class 4. If you find any eggs or lice please can you treat the family so that we can eradicate the problem quickly. This season’s quick cricket tournament begins on Thursday at Miskin Manor Cricket Club. Tomorrow is also the last swimming session for the junior children. The school summer fair is due to take place on Saturday, 20th June starting at 11.00 am. We still need some volunteers to run different stalls at the fair, so if you can give up a few hours on that Saturday, please add your name to the list which is on display in the foyer of the school. Thanks to all parents, children and staff who responded to the teaching questionnaire given out before half term. The responses to each of the different questions were overwhelmingly positive in terms of numbers, either strongly agreeing or agreeing with the statements. I am sure your responses were informed by your children and what they tell you about the work and the learning activities that they have done in school each day. During staff meetings over the course of the term the staff will analyse the data and see how it can help us to move forward and improve as a school. Yours sincerely, Mike Emanuel (Head Teacher)
