Rhondda Heritage Park
February 28, 2010

On Thursday, class 2 and 6 went on an educational visit to Rhondda Heritage Park to find out all about what life was like to work in the mines. The children were taken on a tour through a pretend mine and helped lift lumps of coal into the wagons. They also had the opportunity to play with some old toys and try on the clothes that people would have worn when all the coal mines were open. The children had a fantastic day and really appreciated the conditions that the children of the mines would have to work in.

Starting our Dynamo project
February 28, 2010

Over the next 12-14 weeks in school, every class will be planning, making and marketing a product to sell at the Summer school fete. To start their project, class 2 decided to go on a walk around local businesses to see what products are already being sold in their local area. Many thanks go to the local shopkeepers who were very welcoming to all the children and allowed us to conduct our research. We will keep you posted on all of the classes progress with their business project.

Newsletter 24/02/2010
February 24, 2010
24th February 2010. Dear Parent, Welcome back for the second half of the Spring term. There’s lots going on this week for the children. On Monday evening, Cheerleading classes started for Years 5 & 6, the class was well attended but the instructor has agreed to allow children from Years 3 & 4 to attend from next Monday, should they wish to do so. Yesterday afternoon, the school rugby team played its first cup match of the season and ended up winning a competitive game against Castellau by 21 points to 7. Try scorers were Creegan Griffiths, Tom Prosser and Lewis Willington, all three tries were converted by Corey Encoh. Well done to all the team, every player contributing to the win. Today, members of RCT’s Road Safety Team came to the school to talk to the children in Class 1. Every child in that class will now be receiving a road safety magazine delivered monthly by post to your homes. With World Book Day around the corner, we are planning to hold a Swap Shop Day for books in school. We would like to use this to help build up the supply of books in the school libraries too, so please could you send your children in with two books. This will entitle them to choose one from those brought in by other children, whilst the remaining books will help stock up the libraries. Please could all books sent in be in good repair. Could all parents in Class 2 be extra vigilent at the moment please as I have had a report of head lice in the class from a parent who had to treat her child last night.Could I remind you that if head lice are spotted parents are encouraged to come to school to take the children home for treatment, in order to limit the spread of these pests. Over the next few weeks the school will be trialling a text messaging system called ‘Teachers2Parents’. We need a main mobile contact number for each family so that we can send any important information to you quickly and easily. One number per family will help to keep the costs of the texts down. Swimming restarts for the pupils in Classes 4 tomorrow. The lessons will take place over the next 12 weeks. The first session however, coincides with Class 3’s visit to the War Museum in Swansea, so they will miss this first swimming lesson. Also tomorrow, Classes 2 & 6 are visiting the Rhondda Heritage Centre. Next Wednesday afternoon some of the pupils in Year 6 will have the opportunity to visit the Trimtec Plant on the Llantrisant Industrial Estate. This is a follow up to the visit to the school by the managing director and owner, Harry Palmer. In order to keep up the school’s Green Flag Eco status one of the ideas the children are currently supporting is to encourage as many parents as possible to either walk with them to school or to park at Gwaun Ruperra and walk over from there. This will both reduce traffic congestion around the school, so increasing safety and also get people a little fitter. With applications for places at the school currently high, I know a number of you have concerns regarding places for your children at the school from next September. Hopefully these will be sorted out over the next couple of weeks, but if you do have any concerns please contact me for further details about the current situation. Yours faithfully, Mike EmanuelHead Teacher.
I enclose the main mobile telephone number for my family to which I wish text messages to be sent. Mobile Tel:________________________ Child’s Name______________________ Class_________ Name of Parent _______________________________________(Please Print)

Llantrisant’s Got Talent 2010
February 14, 2010

Well it’s official- Llantrisant DOES have talent, and by that we mean some serious amounts of talent. On Thursday the school was host to special PTA event held to celebrate the extra-curricular talents of the pupils. We saw everything from classic ballet to modern break-dancing and even a brave gymnastics performance. All the children who entered were fantastic and will receive a special certificate for their efforts when we go back to school. The winners on the night were Thomas, Seren and Megan but all acts were deserving of the main prize. The event raised £150 for the school as well so thank you very much for your continued support.

Chinese new year!
February 14, 2010

All week class 5 have been finding out all about Chinese new year and to finish their week they enjoyed a Chinese style banquet and learned how to use chopsticks. Class 5 decided to invite the class 6 children to join them. A big thank you goes to Lisa Chau for organising this event which all the children fully enjoyed.

Roath Park
February 14, 2010

As part of our Geography topic this term we will be comparing aspects of Llantrisant with Cardiff. We started by looking at parks. We have already visited Gwaunruppera Park in Llantrisant to see what that had to offer and so we wanted to visit a totally different park in Cardiff. We chose Roath Park and spent Wednesday morning finding out all about it. It was a cold day so we made sure we did lots of running around to keep us warm.

Evolve Sports
February 14, 2010

On Tuesday, class 2 had a taster sports session with Evolve sports. This was arranged to give the children an idea of what fun activities they could do if they join the Evolve after-school club. The children played a range of different games which developed lots of different skills which will be needed to play competitive sports such as rugby and football. The after-school club is open to all year 1 and 2 children and will be running every Friday after the half-term break. Please see Miss Bobeldijk for more details.

Back in time!
February 7, 2010

As part of their history work this term, class 6 have been learning about schools in the past. To help the children gain a better understanding of what school life was like the children, Mrs Warrilow and Mrs Lloyd dressed up and their classroom became a victorian classroom for the afternoon.

Newsletter 03/02/2010
February 3, 2010
3rd February 2010. Dear Parent,‘Open Door Assemblies’ performed for all the children this afternoon. Tomorrow we have local business man Harry Palmer coming to talk to Class 4. On Monday morning Steve Powderhill is coming along to take St. David’s Day photographs of the children. Mr. Powderhill always insists on taking photographs of only those children who are in costume, so if you would like your child’s photograph in the local paper near St. David’s Day, please ensure they are dressed appropriately on Monday. A new opportunity is going to be provided for the children in Years 5 & 6 on a Monday afternoon, with Class 4 taking part in a Cheerleading lesson lead by Emma Richards. The lesson will be followed next half term by a cheerleading club, which will run on a Monday after school for 1 hour. Next Tuesday on the 9th February the school will be taking part in the Small Schools’ Rugby Competition. The venue is as yet undecided, but we will probably need two additional cars to take the children to the venue. Also on Tuesday afternoon there will be a seminar for parents of children in Class 1, on the benefits and techniques of toothbrushing for children of that age. New toothbrushes and toothpaste have been provided by the local health board and the staff in Class 1 have been working with the children on brushing their teeth. On Thursday next week the children in the junior department will have the opportunity to watch a play called “Straight from the Horses Mouth”, which is an historical drama about the Tonypandy riots. The performance will take place in the school hall with the school being charged £2.00 per head for the performance. It would be greatly appreciated if you could send your child’s entrance fee for the performance as soon as possible, as I am sure the children will gain a lot from the play in terms of understanding a little more of our rich heritage. We have a temporary vacancy in the kitchen from 12.15pm to 1.15pm. If anyone is interested in filling this vacancy could you please see Mrs. Steph Davies, the school cook, or Mrs. Williams the school secretary for further details. Many thanks for your continued support, Yours faithfully,Mike EmanuelHead Teacher.
