Fruity Madness!

March 21, 2010

dscf4922.JPG

This week class 2 finished their current D.T. project to design a fruit salad for young children. The children designed their idea beforehand based on research we conducted as a class and then created their design. Some class 1 children judged our design and awarded Celyn, Roisin and Demi as the winners.

SEAL assemblies

March 21, 2010

 dscf4916.JPG

Last week, all the children in the school took part in their SEAL assembly. SEAL is the resource the school uses to teach PSHE. This terms topic was Relationships and it gave children the opportunity to think about and explore tough emotions like loss, jelousy and anger. The assemblies were an opportunity to share what had been talked about in the classrooms with our parents and carers.

Here is selection of photos from class 1 showing some of the recent work they have done. Above group glas used a zoom lens activity to rank things like family and friends in order of importance to them. They have also been writing short stories using whiteboards and the photo below shows one of the children searching in the woods for signs of life.

Newsletter 17/03/2010

March 17, 2010

17th  March  2010.Dear Parent, The SEAL assembly held yesterday for Key Stage 1 was a very entertaining way of putting across some important messages. The children clearly enjoyed their roles in the presentation and I would like to thank them and the staff for the work they put into making it happen.  The junior SEAL assembly which is being held this afternoon, promises also to carry some important messages and both will, hopefully, help the children come to terms with difficult issues in a fun and purposeful way.  Tomorrow,  Class 4 are going to St. Fagan’s to the Victorian School and I am sure you have already been asked to make sure the children going on the trip turn up in appropriate costumes. Another case of headlice has been reported in Class 2. Please check your children’s hair & treat all the family members if you find any. The trip for Classes 2 & 6  to Southerndown tomorrow is being postponed due to the poor weather forecast.  In the afternoon the Welsh Advisory Teacher, Emma Davies, will be working with the children in the infants and Class 3. On Thursday and Friday of this week,  Mrs. Davies in Class 3,  will be a presenter on one of the LEA’s Good Practice seminars. She will be telling other teachers and heads from RCT about the work that goes on in this school and within the cluster on Thinking Through Talk. On Friday,  the junior children will have the opportunity to use the Maths Problem Solving Kit provided by Techniquest.  Whilst on Friday afternoon Year 5 will be with WPC Louise Daniels,  looking at the dangers of street corner culture.  On Monday evening next week,  the staff will be at school doing a twilight session on planning for the Skills Curriculum 2008. Rugby training for this week has been moved back to Thursday,  as so few boys brought kit for training today. We are due to be playing a competitive match on Sardis Road sometime in the near future,  but will not do so unless we get higher numbers for training. There was an Eco Committee Meeting today at lunchtime. A request has been made by the committee for volunteer helpers to come in occasionally to help with the mini class allotments at the back of the school. If you can give up an hour every week or so to work with children on keeping the allotments ticking over please contact us at the school and let us know. Yours faithfully,                                    Mike Emanuel  (Head Teacher).

March 15, 2010

11th  March  2010.Dear Parent, This weeks letter is a day later than usual as I was lucky enough to accompany Year 5 pupils and some Year 6 to Daerwynno Outdoor Centre for a day of outdoor activities and team building. What a fantastic day it was and thoroughly enjoyable for me to see the children interacting so well and working so comittedly together to succeed in the challenges put before them. After school yesterday, there was a PTA meeting during which a number of exciting ideas were agreed for this year’s Easter event. The event will take place on Wednesday 24th March starting at 4.00 pm and will include an Easter Egg Hunt in the grounds, refreshments, a bonnet parade for which all participants will receive an Easter Egg and Easter Egg Bingo! Can I ask that all of you that are able to, to donate an Easter Egg towards this event. This will ensure a good range of prizes for the children on the evening and help add to the fun. All children taking part in the Easter Egg Hunt will get a mini egg for their efforts, whilst bingo cards will be sold for £1 each on the evening with winners of lines and full houses walking away with a number of the donated eggs. Later in the term the PTA are considering organising an adults only Family Fortunes Night, where teams, not necessarily families, will have a chance to compete against each other in a fun setting. Your class reps will be canvassing you shortly to find out your opinions on this idea. A couple of years back we sold invitation books which offer money off vouchers for a lot of venues and shops in the South Wales area. The cost of the books will be £22 but the idea is that if you look through them you will find lots of ways of making more than this amount back by using the vouchers in the books through the credit card that is within them. The card needs to be authorised and it will be authorised by sending the £22 into school. This afternoon there will be a full governing body meeting held at the school.Year 6 will be returning to Gwaun Rupera from Kingswood at approximately 2.30pm tomorrow. Also tomorrow, the younger children in the school will be given a Road Safety Magic Show by magician David Randini. Basketball will contiue for Class 3 next Monday afternoon. Please ensure all children have kit that they can use in the yard. Whilst on Tuesday afternoon this term’s infant SEAL Assembly will start at 2.15pm and on Wednesday afternoon the junior SEAL assembly will start at 3.00 pm.  If you are able to come along to these events please come along and support your children.  Yours faithfully,                                                Mike Emanuel (Head Teacher)

This poem was written by class 2 this week. The class split into teams of 4 to write a verse each. This poem, as well as pictures the class drew of their mums are on display outside class 2.

Our Mums are Special

My mum is so special, she is so sweet. She makes everything so tidy and neat.My mum is so special, she is so brave. She can hunt for bears in scary caves. My mum is so special, she is so fun.She likes to lay out in the sun.My mum is so special because she gives me a hug. That is why she is a love bug!My mum is so special, she is so sweet. She make me lots of nice things to eat.Fruit and vegetables and lots of meat.My Mum is so special because she is fun.Her work is never ever done. She cooks me a bun and never leaves a crumb!

Road Safety

March 14, 2010

dscf4911.JPG

On Friday, all the children enjoyed a road safety presentation from David Randini. The message of stop, looking and listening before crossing as well as other important rules to keep safe on our roads, were delivered through magic tricks. It was a very enjoyable afternoon for all, which has reminded all children to take on the roads.

Making toast

March 6, 2010

dscf4862.JPG

In science this term, class 2 have been looking at changing materials. This week we were looking to see how bread changes when it is heated to make toast. The children each had a piece of bread that they had to look at closely, measure and weigh and then it was toasted. The children then repeated the measurements of before to see what changes had occurred. Why don’t you try this for yourself and see if what you think will happen actually happens.

World Book Day

March 6, 2010

dscf4857.JPG

Instead of dressing up for world book day, this year we had a book swap day. Each child brought in 2 books to donate. They swapped one book for a different one and then the other book was donated to the school’s libraries. Many thanks for all your generous donations on the day.
