About our School

Llantrisant Primary School was opened in 1974 and admits children from the age of 3+ to 11 years. Each of the four main stream classes by necessity consists of two age groups. This however, poses few problems since the children are organised within their classes into groups according to their own particular ability and stage of development.Together with the four main stream classes the school also has two Learning Support Classes which were established in the late 1980’s. These classes, each containing a maximum of eight pupils, cater for children with special educational needs. The school is organised into three main teaching/learning areas, a nursery/reception area, an infant area and a junior area. All the classrooms are situated around a well-equipped central hall and have the benefit of their own libraries and practical areas.EDUCATIONAL AIMSOur aim is to encourage and develop each child. To provide the high quality teaching and learning experiences to enable all the children to achieve the highest standards of which they are capable in all areas of the curriculum. Opportunities will be provided for each child to develop physically, socially, emotionally, morally and intellectually. The positive contributions that children make to school life will be recognised and valued. In order to help achieve this the teachers will endeavour to provide a disciplined, achieving, stimulating school which will arouse interest and encourage the children to talk, discover and communicate ideas in an environment that is also happy and safe. The main findings in our last inspection report state that Llantrisant Primary School is a warm, caring and friendly school where pupils feel secure. It is well regarded by parents and the community.“All staff work very well together to ensure the wellbeing of all learners, who report that they safe and secure” Estyn, 2009.THE CURRICULUMThe children participate in a wide and varied curriculum with due regard to the requirements of the National Curriculum. This includes History, Geography, Music, P.E., R.E., Art, Technology and Welsh with prominence given to the core subjects of English, Maths and Science. The total time available for teaching, excluding breaks but including registration and collective worship is 24 hours for juniors and 22 hours 20 minutes for infants. R.C.T.’s recommended Early Years Curriculum is delivered in Nursery/Reception classes at the school. Reception class staff use R.C.T.’s “Wheels Forever Turning” file as a basis for planning. This is a skills based resource and will be extended into Class 2 from September 2007. Subject specific work is done as required. In the junior department the themes continue but more specific teaching takes place.
