I will be adding more each week and would like to see some of them in your homework books when I collect them back in in September. You don't have to print them out, just write straight into your books - neatly of course! Handwriting caterpillars can be found further down this page if you need them. Click on the links below to open each page.
Keep developing your language and maths skills over the holidays - I will be adding more games here soon. Hopefully, there will be some more of your favourites as well as some new ones to try.

The children are all making very good progress with their reading of the high frequency words sent home at half term. Please could you continue to support their recognition of the lists given, by encouraging them to read the words in a variety of ways: -
- As flash cards.
- Finding a word from a small group (i.e. Can you find...)
- Using them in sentences. How many can they use in one sentence?
- Time and record how many words they can read correctly in a minute. Remember to discount any that they word build. Are they improving their scores?

Roll a Dice Games
Here are some more fun games to play while challenging your vocabulary skills! You don't need to print the game sheets as you could make your own, but you will need a dice or spinner to play the game. The rules are printed on the sheets and, as always, you can play for points if you wish! The games here are to develop your use of adjectives (describing words), verbs (action or doing words), rhyming words and specific spelling patterns. If you have any ideas to create a board, why not let me know and we can set the challenge! Click on the links below to choose your game board. |

Word Challenge
This challenge is another test of your vocabulary skills. We are looking for as many different ways as possible to describe an action instead of using a 'safe' word. A 'safe' word is one that we tend to use too often in our writing, usually because it's the first word we think of. Why not bring your completed charts in to school and together, we can create word maps for other children to use. I wonder who will bring in the most interesting words? Word Challenge - Said Word Challenge - Went Word Challenge - Look |
- Why not challenge your friends or family? Beat the clock by listing as many words as you can in a set time. Award bonus points for the most interesting words.
Word Play Grids (Set 2)
I hear that we now have visitors from other schools that are enjoying our games, including the word play grids - a warm welcome to you all! I have uploaded some new grids to keep you all busy. The rules, should you need them, are listed further down the page. Have fun learning! Click on the images below to see the full page layout. Thanks to MyCuteGraphics for clip art images. |
Game Suggestion 3
Another fun way to play with words is to write them in code. Use the code below to write either a short message or sentence, or perhaps a list of words with the same spelling pattern - your target words for example!
|
Word Play Grids (Set 1)
Have you ever played Boggle? Here are some grids to challenge your word building and spelling skills. You can make the game more interesting by playing against family members of friends. If you're really up for a challenge, why not try and beat the clock by setting a time limit in which to find words! Don't forget that beating your own score each time also counts as a win for you! Click on the images below to see the full page layout. Thanks to MyCuteGraphics for clip art images. |
Game Suggestion 2
'Make a Word' is another favourite game in our lessons. Using a group of 5 consonants (no vowels used) which are chosen at random, the challenge is to think of a word that contains as many of the letters in it as possible. Players say a word containing some or all of the tiles, then place the letter tiles in the order in which they appear in the word - see slideshow below. Some children find it a challenge to visualise words, but this can be overcome by giving them a word and asking them to arrange the letter tiles in the order that they hear them. This game can easily be extended further, by asking the children to identify the missing letters needed to complete the word - including the vowels. Adding values to the letters (as in Scrabble), can also make the game more interesting! Have fun while learning! Choose a new set of tiles when all players start to struggle to find new words. |
