We will be reading and studying a selection of these books this year, but they are also excellent suggestions for reading at home to or with your child alongside their school reading book. You'll have probably read some of them when you were in school and they can all be picked up at the local library or cheaply on Amazon. Please note down in their reading records if they are reading and enjoying any of these books at home! Click on the correct link below to take a look! Thanks. Mr Howells :)
Home work - 13/9/19
Below is your child's homework for the week. They also have a paper copy that is stuck in their homework books. Please return it to school by Tuesday 17th September so that their ideas can feed into my planning.
They also have a new game added to their Activelearn account. Their username is written in their books, but if it's not to hand it's easy to remember; it's the first 4 letters of their first name followed by the first 4 letters of their surname, e.g. chrijone for Christopher Jones. The password is gwyrdd and the school code is pmsw (all letters are lower case!)
I am still assessing the children's spelling, so spellings will be sent home next week to be tested the following week.

Scratch is an online learning platform where the kids can practise coding, a skill-set that is becoming more and more important in the world today. I use it a lot in school and the tutorials (tips) are excellent and can guide you through the process of coding simple programmes. Sign up is free, but your child will need an email address to sign up (they don't send any ads or spam emails, just a single email to activate the account). Any projects that the pupils create can be saved and shared in school to show off their coding skills! The more practise they can do at home the better! Thank you for your continued support! Mr Howells |

summer half term task
Over the past half term in Dosbarth Gwyrdd we have been doing a lot of field work around the habitats of our school grounds.
Your independent project this half term is to create a fact file based on an animal/mini-beast found in or around the school grounds (examples are frogs, butterflies, grass hoppers etc).
Your work can either be a few pages of A4 or A3 card (or larger!)
You will need to include information about your creature such as: appearance, food, predators, life cycle, habit and any other information you would like to include.
Please complete your fact files and bring them into school to present to the class after half term (no later than Friday 16th June). Extra house points will be awarded depending on how much detail is included in the fact file. The fact files will also have to be presented to the class, so make sure you understand and memorise the information!
Thank you for your cooperation and have a lovely holiday!

Run a mile for sport relief!
Don't forget that this Friday (18th) is Sport Relief! To raise some much needed money for the charity, the KS2 children are running a mile (18 laps of the yard!) led my Mr Howells himself! Apart from appropriate footwear, the pupils can wear what they like (weather permitting) but must bring these clothes to change into after lunch. School uniform MUST be worn in the morning. It is 50p to enter, it should be great fun! Diolch!

Learning about islam
Dosbarth Gwyrdd have been learning about the origins of the Islamic religion, as well as how a Muslim prays and what they need to do so. Max is wearing a Taqiyah or Topi, which is a traditional Islamic cap worn by Muslim men and boys. Evan is holding a Sajjada, or prayer mat. This is to keep the worshipper clean and comfortable inside the mosque during Sujud (prayer). Notice the compass attached so the worshipper can ensure they are facing Mecca. Emily is holding the Qu'ran, the Islamic holy book and Chloe is holding the stand that is used to hold the Qu'ran and keep it clean.

P.E this week - catching and throwing a ball!
Pupils thoroughly enjoyed a variety of passing and throwing games using a large ball as well as developing their team working skills. Always an important skill to practise both in school and at home! Any practise that you can do with your child at home on a sunny day can be invaluable in developing their motor skills!

Tell me a Dragon...
As part of the whole school study of the book 'Tell me a Dragon' by Jackie Morris, Dosbarth Gwyrdd have been writing some beautiful and emotive desriptions of the various dragons that feature in the story, using similes to add effect. A particularly strong example was 'Eyes as black as a moonless night..' They then used these descriptions to design 'Missing Dragon' posters. I will upload more examples as they come in!

dosbarth gwyrdd have been writing welsh poems using an atlas???
This morning, the pupils of Dosbarth Gwyrdd have been writing cerddi (poems) inspired by the cerdd 'Ble wyt ti'n Byw?' gan Hedd ap Emlyn. Not only did it mean that the pupils were practising some new vocabulary, but they were also using an atlas to search for countries that rhyme with family names 'e.g. Mae Yncl Huw yn byw yn Peru!' Bobl Bach!

Dosbarth Gwyrdd studies William Morris!
This week Dosbarth Gwyrdd have been studying the work of the 19th century artist William Morris. They loved his beautiful wall paper designs and we're excited to experiment in his style with their own designs. Check this space next week to see the pupil's interpretations.

Dosbarth Gwyrdd - Counterfeit Coin Detectives!
This morning, Dosbarth Gwyrdd were visited by Lucy from the Royal Mint. We learnt all about counterfeit money, how it is made and how you can sort a real coin from a fake one. They learnt about the history of counterfeit coins and some criminals who mastered the art of making them (many of whom were hanged!) They also learnt about materials and equipment needed to make a counterfeit coin and how the Royal Mint have special ways of spotting a fake. They thoroughly enjoyed being investigators and we all look forward to the new Education Centre opening up at the Royal Mint site later this year! Diolch yn fawr, Lucy for a fantastic morning!

Below is one of Dosbarth Gwyrdd's half term tasks as well as some links to websites that the children might find useful.
Dosbarth Gwyrdd’s half term task
Linking with our study of the lives of the poor in Victorian times, I would like you to research the life of one of the ’reformers’ who made it their duty to help the poor in any way they could. In class we have discussed the good work of Lord Shaftesbury and Dr Thomas Barnardo, so you can research their lives or you are welcome to research any other Victorian reformer (the more variety we have the better!). The choices for how you will display your research are below;
2 house points - To design a poster showing your chosen reformer and some facts about their lives.
3 house points - To create a presentation on the computer (using Microsoft Powerpoint) or by hand that you will present to the class, giving some information on their upbringing but mainly focussing on their work to better the lives of the impoverished Victorians.
Remember to include plenty of detail and make it interesting for your peers - no copy and pasting from Wikipedia! Below are links to some useful websites. Good luck and have a great half term break! :)

Dosbarth Gwyrdd had a fantastic morning making some Victorian food with Mrs Chow. This linked to the research the children have been doing on the significant differences between the food of the Victorian lower and upper class. Some enjoyed the gruel, but all enjoyed the pineapple upside down cakes! Which would you prefer??? :) Pictures to follow!
Dear parents. Last week I handed out letters to inform you of Dosbarth's Gwyrdd's visit to Llancaiach Fawr on Wednesday 3rd February. The trip will include a full tour of the house and grounds as well as a workshop where the pupils will be making herb bags using fresh herbs and muzzling. The cost of the trip and bus combined is £10 and they will need to bring a packed lunch. Please could you return the slip that you child has been given as well as the payment ASAP so that I can confirm the booking. It promises to be a fantastic day! Sincerely, Mr Howells.
Below is an overview of what is happening in Dosbarth Gwyrdd in the coming term. If you can't access it for any reason, or if you have any questions about it, please feel free to pop in after school. Thank you for you continued support. Mr Howells (Class teacher).
Welcome back everyone and a happy new year!
This term's topic is Children of the Revolution. The pupils will be learning about what life was like for people living in Victorian Britain, with a particular focus on Wales at this time. They will research Victorian schooling, jobs, fashion and architecture among other things. If you have any books on Victorian Britain that are suitable for the pupils to use when researching then they would be much appreciated this term.
Here's to an exciting and busy term
