Saint fagans
The children thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Saint Fagans where they were able to make observations on how things have changed over time; from houses, to schools and toys. They were fascinated to find a bath tub in the middle of a kitchen and could not get over the size of the televisions in the past compared to now . The children were most enthusiastic learning about Toys from the past and made all the teachers very proud when they were able to identify the different materials the toys were made from and the reasons why. They had lots of fun playing some old games form the past and are looking forward to making some of these games in school.

Dosbarth Oren have worked very hard this week reinforcing letter sounds. We identified the animal in the pictures and had a go at making the word ourselves by selecting initial, middle and final sounds. Please practise this at home by playing games such as Balloon Phonics.www.topmarks.co.uk/phonics/balloon-phonics-cvc-game

Handwriting
We made the most of the dry weather and went outside to practise our letter formation. Today we focused on the Curly Caterpillar letters (c, a, o, e, q, g, d, f, s). Please encourage your child to practise this skill at home.

Happy snow day!
If you get out to play in the snow please post a picture onto your child's hwb - we'd love to see them!
Here are some tasks for you:
Homework Task - My Favourite Animal
Talk to your child and find out what their favourite farmyard animal is and why. With adult support get the children to draw a picture of the animal and write facts they have learnt. Return these to school so the children can share what they have learnt with their classmates.
Maths - coins
We have started to learn about money this week. Please empty out your purses and wallets and identify coins (1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20, 50p and £1).
Look at the shape and colour. Draw around them and colour in. What numbers/value can you see?
Sort the coins into groups of 1p etc
You could start your own shop by labelling tins/packets 1p, 2p etc and take turns being customer/shopkeeper.
Please post pictures to your child's hwb and show us and we will share with the class when we are back in. The children really love seeing themselves on the big whiteboard and talking about what they have done. It's an excellent opportunity to develop the skill of speaking in front of a group.
Have fun and stay safe.

World Book Day
The children had a wonderful day dressing up and sharing their favourite stories. I think you will agree the children all look fantastic. The book we chose to study as a school was 'You've Got Dragons'. The children talked about their feelings and came up with solutions on how we could make somebody sad feel happy.

We've been reading the story 'Rosie's Walk' so this week, we have been using positional language and learning how to programme the BeeBots.
We had fun making mud pictures in the woods today. The children were able to independently problem solve by asking and answering questions to each other such as
My mud is to thick. How can I make it thinner?
I cant find a paintbrush, what else can I use to make my picture?
I've spilt my mixture, can I share your mud please?
How much more water is needed to make the mud like paint?
What fun we had!

Monday 8th April
We started our STEM week today (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths). The children had lots of fun melting chocolate and pouring into moulds to make chocolate eggs, inflating balloons using baking powder and discovering if everyday items sink or float.
Why not test yourselves:
Does a crayon sink or float?
Does a wooden clothes peg sink or float?
Does an elastic band sink or float?
Try it out at home - It's lots of fun!
Don't forget you are invited into class on Thursday 11th April, 2.30pm to find out what the children have been doing this week. We look forward to showing you all our learning experiences.

The children are having lots of fun with out theme "Read me a Story"
This week's book is "Jack and the Beanstalk". The children have started it off by making a junk model beanstalk (we knew collecting all those paper towel tubes would come in useful one day!), and using adjectives to describe the main characters. We have looked at bean seeds and compared them to the pee seeds from a couple of weeks ago. We are so pleased the children remember what a seed needs to grow, and they have asked to plant bean seeds to grow our own beanstalks! Let's hope they are magic
The book for this week is "The Three Billy Goats Gruff"
The children have been very enthusiastic about our books. At the start of the topic we asked the children what books they would like to read (pupil voice), and they are enjoying finding out on a Monday morning what the book for the week is!

We have had lots of fun planting peas, building the princesses bed out of duplo, drawing and painting peas and pea shoots. We have also buried peas in the sand and have been exploring how to get them back out with sieves!

Here we are in the bakery. This was one of our favourite areas we watched Matthew the baker make bread. We were lucky enough to taste bread and doughnuts.
We also went in the freezer but as you can imagine we didn't stay in there too long. We saw the fish monger who very kindly showed us the different types of fish.
A big thank you to everyone at Tesco especially to Paula who made us all feel very welcome.
Science Week
The children have enjoyed participating in a number of science activities this week. Where possible we have linked the activities with our topic 'Supermarket'.
We tested bags to see which ones were waterproof. We experimented with cress and learnt what plants need in order to grow and be healthy.
Some dinosaurs some how got frozen in water so we had to find out which was the quickest way to free them.
The most popular science experiment was to make bread. We made the bread with Mrs Chau and found out what was needed to make the bread rise and taste nice.
The children really enjoyed having the parents coming in and experiencing what they had learnt. We even set them some challenges.

A visit from an illustrator
A big thank you to Cerys Rees (Taran's mum) for coming in and discussing her job as an illustrator for children's' books. The children enjoyed listening to the story 'A Lovely Day for a Walk'. They also had fun playing with a few character from the story. The children experienced painting in water colours. (To find out more please visit Fisherton Press Amazon.)

Our shopping trip to the local store.
We had lots of fun visiting the Bull Ring stores. A big thank you to Dai for being so kind and patient with us. We have been reinforcing the value of the different coins. Please could you continue to do this at home. Have a lovely half term everyone. |
A walk in the woods
We have been exploring in the woods and have collected natural things, such as leaves, sticks and moss. We then made crowns. Some of the children made patterns using all the natural objects.
'Dens and Dandelions'.
This term our topic is 'Dens and Dandelions'. The project has a forest skills and science focus which teaches the children about plants, flowers, trees and creatures found in a woodland habitat. The topic involves us spending a lot of time outside so fingers crossed for good weather. If anyone has any resources they feel would be useful to our topic they would be gratefully received. Keep checking the page for regular updates and pictures showing the children hard at work. Reminders * Please provide your child with a drink of water and a piece of fruit for afternoon play. * P.E.day is a Friday please provide your child with the appropriate kit (leggings/joggers, shorts and t-shirt). * Reading - Please make sure all reading folders are returned to school on a Wednesday. |
